Lecturer in Civil Engineering

The Opportunity

The School of Information Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Physics is one of the largest schools in the University of the South Pacific and is sufficiently resourced to pursue excellence in teaching and research. The school offers a number of Undergraduate programs which includes the 2 accredited engineering programs (Electrical and Electronics Engineering and Mechanical Engineering), Civil Engineering, Physics, Computer Science/Information Systems and Mathematics. It also offers Post Graduate study programs.

The school is now searching for a staff who can join the existing, dynamic team and take the school forward to strengthen the areas of Geotechnical Engineering, Foundation and Pavement Design, Design of Concrete Structures, Hydrology and Coastal Engineering, Hydraulic Engineering and Construction (Roads and Marine Applications), Water Resources, Application of Machine Learning in Civil Engineering (like water resources and/or structural engineering).

A Lecturer is expected to make contributions to the teaching effort of the University and to carry out activities to maintain and develop their scholarly, research and/or professional activities relevant to the profession or discipline. A Lecturer is expected to demonstrate excellent communication skills and the ability to network effectively and interact with a diverse range of students and staff.

Specific duties required of a Lecturer may include:

- course coordination; including marking and assessment,
- preparation and delivery of lectures, tutorials, practical classes, demonstrations, workshops, student field excursions, clinical sessions, and studio sessions,
- curriculum development,
- academic counselling and consultation with students,
- conduct of individual and/or collaborative research; and enhancement of one’s research profile,
- supervision of postgraduate research projects in accordance with the USP Postgraduate Research Supervision policy,
- involvement in Paid Outside Work in accordance with Paid Outside Work Policy,
- assigned administrative responsibilities, and
- attendance at School/Institute meetings and/or membership of committees.

The Person We Seek

To be considered for this position, applicants must have:
i. a PhD in the Civil Engineering or cognate discipline with relevant tertiary teaching; or
ii. in exceptional cases, a Master’s degree or professional qualification with relevant teaching experience or relevant industry/professional experience or a significant research profile.
iii. Other Minimum Qualification Requirements may be stipulated according to particular disciplinary requirements, following international standards.

Preference will be given to applicants with:

- A teaching qualification such as Postgraduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching (PGCTT) or equivalent

The position is available for a term of 5 years and may be renewed by mutual agreement, subject to successful performance outcomes.
Salary Range: FJ $73,689 to FJ $96,958 per annum
