Accounts Payable Accountant

The Opportunity

The Accounts Payable Accountant is responsible for effective coordination and management of overall payment and payment support functions of the University. The incumbent is responsible for managing the payments process to deliver timely payments – annual payments average 30,000 transactions. This entails working closely with all Academic and Non-Academic Sections of the University, ensuring complete and accurate payment documents are submitted for payment processing.

The incumbent will be expected to ensure that payments comply with the relevant Finance policies and procedures, and have the approval of the competent delegate as per the Financial Delegations

It is essential for the incumbent to monitor performance of the Accounts Payable Unit against agreed key performance indicators (KPIs), coach and mentor staff to achieve their KPIs, take appropriate actions to address potential barriers to achievement and identify staff development and training opportunities.

The incumbent will provide effective leadership with a strong focus on vendor (both internal and external), staff and student staff satisfaction. The appointee will instigate and implement procedures for the continuous improvement of the payments function through process and systems enhancement.

The Person We Seek
To be considered for any of this positions, applicants must have:
- Postgraduate qualifications in Accounting/Financial Management with at least 5 years’ experience in a similar position with large multi-user environment or a finance related degree with extensive experience (over 7 years) in financial operations in a large and complex organization;
- Significant interpersonal skills requiring independent professional judgement;
- Demonstrated experience in effective monitoring of work performance of individuals and teams delivering payment services;
- Good level of IT literacy, familiarity with database, MS Word and MS Excel, and other accounting software (computerized General Ledger environment);
- Strong understanding of complex accounting and budget frameworks;
- Experience in preparing annual plans, reports and management reports for Accounts Payable Section;
- Strong time management and planning skills to coordinate and prioritize multiple tasks;
- Proven ability to lead and work with others in multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary teams, collaboratively and ethically, across multiple organizational units;
- Capable of innovating and developing process improvement plans from existing practices;
- Proven experience in building and sustaining productive internal and external stakeholder relationships;
- Must possess established conceptual, analytical and strategic thinking skills including the ability to identify emerging issues, expertise to resolve complex issues and manage innovative solutions to complex problems;
- Able to maintain confidentiality and use sound judgment and discretion;
- Concern for thoroughness, accuracy and integrity;
- Highly developed interpersonal communication skills with proven experience in building and sustaining productive internal and external stakeholder relationships;

Preference will be given to applicants with:
- Current member of a related professional body;
- Proven record of knowledge and experience in a similar position in a University context handling multi-currency transactions involving different countries driving improvements; and
- Excellent project management skills and ability to work well under pressure.
- Experience working or travelling in the Pacific Islands would be an advantage.

The position is available for a term of three years and may be renewed by mutual agreement.
Salary Range: FJ $50,184 to FJ $61,289 per annum
